Libya to double generation capacity by 2030, needs American companies’ help: GECOL head Al-Abdali

Wiam Al-Abdali, head of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), said Libya aims to double its power generation capacity from 8,000 MW to 16,000 MW by 2030.

The GECOL head was speaking yesterday at the by-invitation-only American Chamber of Commerce in Libya’s (AmCham Libya) event at the Mahari Radisson Blue hotel hosting the first U.S. business delegation to visit Libya in ten years. The delegation included representatives of Bechtel, Caterpillar, GE, Hill and Pratt and Whitney.

Al-Abdali said Libya, and specifically GECOL, needs much help from American companies to achieve this production increase as demand for power was increasing fast – well beyond peer or world average. He expected demand to increase dramatically as Libya switched from ‘‘war to industry and production’’.

The GECOL head also sought increased training of his organization’s cadres especially in the technical and workover departments.
