Tripoli West Fast Track power station about to enter production: GECOL
The state General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced that the first unit of the Tripoli West Fast track Power Plant is ”about to enter production”. It did not specify exactly when.
It stated that the completion rate has reached 90% of the work on the project, which it is relying on to cover a large part of the generation deficit. The production capacity of Tripoli West is about 670 megawatts.
GECOL began implementing the Tripoli West project as a ‘‘fast track’’ project, giving it all the procedural and financial priority it needed, in May 2021. This was part of a strategic plan to raise the production capacity of the public network in various regions of the country to cover the generation deficit and greatly reduce or eliminate frequent power outages during peak demand periods.
Moreover, incumbent Caretaker Prime Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba had made a promise upon taking office in 2021 that there would be no more power cuts by the summer peak demand season in 2022.
